Learn The Easy Way Of Installing A New Faucet

Installing a new faucet is a small enough project that can be carried by most of the homeowners having little knowledge of plumbing and with the help of some basic tools. You can install a new faucet in one to two hours using a pair of large channel lock pliers and a crescent wrench.

To begin with, turn the water supply off to the faucet. Usually this can be done by turning the valves off under the sink. Confirm the water to the faucet is off by turning the faucet on and confirming no water flows from it.

Now you need to disconnect the flexible supply lines from the valves attached to the hot and cold supply pipes. Next remove the old faucet mounting nuts that hold the faucet on the sink. After this, remove the mounting nut that secures the stopper pull rod and stopper drain bracket assembly to the drain tail pipe.

Then remove the J-Trap drain assembly from the sink tail pipe. The faucet should now be able to be lifted from the sink. With the old faucet removed, clean around the sink area using a rag and putty knife.

Next visit your local home improvement store and find a replacement faucet with the same spacing between the hot and cold threaded tail pieces of your old faucet. Also pick up two flexible replacement supply lines.

You can now connect the new flexible supply lines to the threaded tail pieces of the new faucet. After this install the new faucet over the mounting hole of the sink and secure the faucet with the help of mounting plates or nuts that came with the new faucet.

Connect the other end of the flexible supply lines to the hot and cold supply valves on the pipes and connect the new tail pipe to the sink drain. Now you need to install the new Drain/Stopper assembly that came along with the new faucet.

Reconnect the J-Trap drain assembly to the drain tail pipe. Turn the supply line valves back to the ON position. Turn the new faucet on and check for leaks around all the compression fittings. If any leaks are found, turn off the supply line valves and tighten the leaky fitting nuts. Then turn the supply lines back on and confirm the leaks have been stopped.

In manual mixer shower unit, the hose and spray are a part of wall unit. In this, hot and cold supplies are joined together in a single valve. For controlling temperature and pressure of the water, you can use one or many different knobs.

Temperature can be easily controlled in manual mixer shower units but they are costly than the above mentioned mixers. For installing hot and cold water supply pipes, additional plumbing is required.

Just like manual mixer, in thermostatic mixer also, the hose and spray are part of wall unit and there is a single valve for hot and cold water supplies. Thermostatic mixer has a built-in stabilizer to self-adjust the water temperature. Therefore, there is no problem of temperature adjustment here.

A power shower is a single unit containing a powerful electric pump that is capable of altering both the water pressure and temperature. This type of shower can be fitted if there is water supply from a cold water cistern and a hot water cylinder. A power shower makes the adjustment of both pressure and temperature easy.

Electric shower units are usually fixed in cold water supply line and there only it heats the water. For adjusting temperature and pressure, a knob is provided in this shower unit. A common problem with this unit is that you can maintain high temperatures only at low pressure and low temperature only at a high pressure. However, models that come with winter/summer setting, solves this problem.

Common Standards For Toilet Plumbing

Once you have kicked off the job of remodeling your toilet setup then there are certain guidelines that need to be followed. In the plumbing terms, these guidelines are known as ‘plumbing codes’. It becomes mandatory to adhere to these codes while setting up a corresponding plumbing segment. If you have installed a toilet setup that violates the codes then you may have to carry out the required modifications under the law enforced by the local authorities.

When it comes to the installation of the toilet setups then homeowners or the plumbers need to keep certain specifications in mind. Generally, the flanges of the toilet setup must be installed by maintaining a gap of about 12 inches between the sub-floor and the wall. Furthermore, the supervision of an expert may help you with the efficiency of the installation job.

Once the exact location of installing the toilet flanges is determined, secure the setup in place using the standard stainless screws of 3 inches each. The flanges would be screwed to the sub-floor that lies beneath the upcoming toilet fixture.

Next, the elbow that would support the rest of the toilet setup is installed in place. An elbow with 3 inch diameter and 90-degree angle is considered appropriate for holding the toilet weight.

Sometimes the stack accumulated on the concrete floors or cellar may pose a problem to the successful installation of the toilet setup. Without thorough washing, the accumulated stack would flow down into the crawlspace or basement area. Remove such foreign deposits from the surface of the floor before putting a toilet structure in place. Furthermore, you can consult an expert to derive certain valuable suggestions on the same issue.

Next, the cold water supply setup must adhere to the code specifications as well. Generally, the cold water supply point must be installed at a distance of 6 inches from the toilet structure and should be on the left of the toilet setup. Also, a distance of about 9 inches must be maintained between the wall and the toilet.

Besides these commonly applicable standards, there are a number of guidelines that must be followed during the whole revamping project. Also, you may discuss the details with the concerned plumber to save your development from getting disapproved.

Internet can be used as a tool for gathering the required knowledge. Check the local web pages to determine the applicable local plumbing codes.

What Are Water Softeners ?

The term hard water refers to water with a high mineral content. The most common minerals that cause water hardness are calcium and magnesium. As water is absorbed into the ground, the minerals are pulled from the earth and eventually end up in a household’s water supply.

Hard water is not fit to be used for household purposes like cooking, bathing and washing cloths. The main reason behind this is that the minerals present inside the hard water do allow water to form leather with soap and detergent. It rather forms a scum that is difficult to wash away. Hard water can also cause blocking of pipes.

Soap scum, stiff clothing, clogged pipes, difficulty in surface cleaning, scale build up, spots in dishes that come out of the dishwasher are some common problems that occur because of hard water, a frustrating but fixable situation.

Hardness of water or mineral content of water can be measured in different terms like grains per gallon (GPG), parts per million (PPM) or milligrams per liter (MG/L). Water up to 1 GPG is soft water, water from 1 to 3.5 GPG is considered moderate and water from 3.5 to 7 GPG comes under hard water category. From a water softener dealer, you can get a kit to test the hardness of water.

Water softeners work by replacing ions of the minerals that cause hardness with softer ions. Water is filtered through charged plastic beads and the magnesium or calcium ions are replaced with sodium or potassium ions. In the case of magnetic water softeners, magnetic energy causes chemical changes in the minerals.

You can get a water softener within a price range of $400 to $1,200 and a bag of salt in $5 to $7. Price of water softener varies because of type, size and kind of softening agent used. In a magnetic water softener, you will find 2 magnets attached to the outside or inside of water pipes.

Ionic exchange water softener consists of negatively charged plastic beads, a brine tank and a regenerating system which has a timer or monitoring device. For regeneration, sodium or potassium chloride is added to the brine tank.

There is no health issue in consuming water that is softened through water softener. But it is big problem for those who are restricted to have sodium in their diet. In this case potassium chloride can be used for softening water but it is quite expensive solution.

Guide To Unclog A Blocked Drain

Blocking of drains is quite common in day to day life but is very frustrating problem that makes your work inconvenient. To solve this problem, you may hire a professional but before hiring him, try the below mentioned alternatives yourself. If the problem will get solved, water will start running freely through the pipes.

The first step in eliminating any blockage is to clear the drain. Blocked bathroom drains are generally caused by hair and soap scum that collects just inside the drain. With a length of wire, a screwdriver or a long, thin implement, clear the blocked drain by trying to pull the mass out, bit by bit.

Plunger is also considered very efficient in curing blocked drains. For using a plunger, put it over the blocked drain of sink or bathtub. The sink or bathtub should have sufficient water to cover the plunger cup.

Coating the rim of the plunger cup with petroleum jelly can help create a tighter seal for more suction. Press the plunger cup over the drain and pump the plunger 15 to 20 strokes. In many cases this will clear parts of the blockage and water may begin to flow.

You can also use a drain auger for clearing the drains. It is sold at most hardware and home supply stores. Remove filters or stops on the sink or tub and guide a drain auger down into the pipes, working the auger carefully in the bends of the pipe. The auger should eventually catch on the blockage and gentle pulling may loosen and clear the blocked drain.

If the blockage is quite deep inside where auger could not reach easily then you would need to remove the sink trap. The draining water can be collected in a bucket. Now when you will use the auger at the opening of the sink trap, it may reach further.

If your blockage is cleared then let scalding hot water to run through that drain for around 10-15 minutes. This will clear out the drain properly and would remove any impurity that may have left inside it.

Unblocking a blocked drain requires some determination and patience. If a homeowner solves this problem at home without calling a plumber then he can save a good amount of money.

Tips For Installing A Faucet

Fixing a new faucet is not a very difficult task to perform. A homeowner with sufficient plumbing knowledge can do this installation in just one or two hour. The tools required for the installation of a faucet are: pair of large channel lock pliers and a crescent wrench.

To begin with, turn the water supply off to the faucet. Usually this can be done by turning the valves off under the sink. Confirm the water to the faucet is off by turning the faucet on and confirming no water flows from it.

Next disconnect the flexible supply lines from the valves attached to the hot and cold supply pipes. After disconnecting the flexible supply lines, remove the old faucet mounting nuts that secure the faucet to the sink.

Next join the end of flexible supply lines to the valves on hot and cold supply pipes and then connect the new tail pipe to the sink drain.

After this fix new drain/stopper assembly that you have got along with the new faucet into the sink basin. Now connect again the J-Trap drain assembly to the drain tail pipe and turn on the supply line valves.

Turn the new faucet on and check for leaks around all the compression fittings. If any leaks are found, turn off the supply line valves and tighten the leaky fitting nuts. Then turn the supply lines back on and confirm the leaks have been stopped.
