There aren’t enough hours in the day to read what I want to read in my constant quest for knowledge. My business is as an entrepreneur, so I’m always interested in new ways of making money. An audio book seemed a good idea to fill in the time when I was driving.

I read the reviews of several money making audio books before settling for The Richest Man in Babylon. I only paid $4.95 for this, and quite frankly it was a complete waste of money.

The voices used in audio books are vital, and the old English tongue used here was far from impressive, and quickly began to grate. There was also only just over 4 hours of listening time.

To be honest, this book should be marketed towards those who are just starting out in the money making game and are eager to think themselves clever by decoding stories and finding the not too well hidden meanings. Most of the principals are obvious, though some are understated.

As opposed to just one story, The Richest Man in Babylon is a compilation of tales which run concurrently. The stories are simple to grasp but the characters get confused.

If you are hoping to learn something new from this book, you will be as disappointed as me. It preaches the old principal of the divisible income, you know the one. Spend 10% on investments, 70% on everyday needs and the remaining 20% on clearing debts.

Other wise teachings are that you should never accept financial advice from those who aren’t experts, and don’t become a heavy gambler…I kid you not!

All this is well and good if you are either a child or a bit of an idiot, but if you have to be told this stuff you shouldn’t be working in finance.

The Richest Man in Babylon may have had great reviews, but unless you are an absolute beginner who doesn’t even have a bank account, you will learn absolutely nothing from this book and it will be four hours of your life that you will never get back again. That may sound harsh but I am a successful business man seeking more success, not looking to go over stuff that I learnt at grade school.

I’ve always been a fan of springtime (although who isn’t right?) there’s something so necessary and almost magical, about those first few days. When it seems half of the city hasn’t gotten the memo yet, and there’s always a couple people who are romping around in blizzard-worthy attire, while those who don’t leave bed without checking the weather are sporting the new khakis they got on sale. Ah sweet, sweet Spring!

Now let me tell you, I love a pair of good khakis! But… that’s not why I get so excited for this season. I love Spring because of one very simple thing. Choices.

I once read: “No man can know the word spring, until he comes to see a winter pass.” I’m no stranger to the cold and snow, trust me Canada certainly holds its own in the “battle royale” of winters. I can still remember as a child the strange thrill of the grass beginning to peek through the earth, the days getting longer, and of course there was spring vacation.

Spring meant choice. No longer would I have the details of my day dictated by the weather, it was the season of freedom.

Becoming an entrepreneur is like finding Spring all year round. Your day is no longer at the whim of a boss, or a commute (I’m still working on the weather part). Each day is filled with illimitable possibility.

As this spring gets underway, I invite you to celebrate your choices; the choice to be an entrepreneur, to pave your own path, to make your own mark. Celebrate the fact that you don’t have to be in a cubicle all day, you don’t have to punch in and out, and your commute can be as far as living room today if you feel like it.

Many people have been conditioned to think that one has to suffer to experience success. It’s as though one must be stricken with a dull, boring life to remain focused, or to continue achieving.

Let me be the first to say this is so, so very wrong! Success comes as a result of doing what you love, and doing it well. From the value you provide to the society you serve. Not from attempting to endure the uncomfortable for as long as possible. Of course, hard work is involved. But hard work does not have to be a sufferable experience. An entrepreneur must learn to maintain a sense of urgency even when their back IS NOT against the wall.

Take your business outside this week. Invest in a wireless card. Make what you enjoy to do, part of your daily business routine. Answer some emails from the park or your backyard, do your follow up calls from the beach today. Celebrate the fact that you can actually make these choices.

If you want to get free publicity, you need to send a press release to the media. But a press release is basically your calling card to the media. It is a sales pitch that contains the hook of the story and some basic facts. It covers the broad strokes, not the details. So if you really want to increase the probability that your press release will be read, you may want to add in a fact sheet as a separate item.

For this reason, many people who are serious about getting publicity create what is called a press kit, which may include, among other items, a photo, a list of suggested questions and a fact sheet.

A great way to make your pitch to the media stronger is to augment is to include a separate fact sheet with the press release. Fact sheets are easy to create. Simply list of series of facts that relate to your story.

For the sake of this discussion, let’s say that you’re a real estate agent or broker. You could create a fact sheet that has the following types of information:

The median price of the average home in your area.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about the nature of free publicity and how to go about getting it. Here are seven myths that may keep you from getting the publicity you deserve.

Myth 1. Publicity and advertising are the same. You pay for advertising, but you don’t pay for publicity. Even if you hire a publicist, the cost is much less than advertising. Yet it has more value, because publicity is treated as news.

Myth 2. You must first have media contacts to get free publicity. While having contacts can help, thousands of businesses and individuals without contacts get publicity every day.

Myth 3. Only the big guys can get free publicity. Wrong. Refer to Myth 2.

Myth 4. You should send your press release everywhere. Doing this is counterproductive. You should target your release to the right outlets and the right journalists. For example, say your company has just released new customer relations software. Don’t buy a giant media list and send it to everyone on it. Select the business publications and talk shows and the editors of the business sections of newspapers and magazines, as well as business websites, and send your release to them only. Warning: only send the release to one person at a media outlet at a time. If that person turns you down, then it is okay to contact another one.

Myth 5. You should send out lots of press releases. Wrong again. Don’t pester the media with a press release about every minor thing that happens. If you do, they will stop reading your press releases altogether. Wait until you have something newsworthy. Then go after free publicity.

Myth 6. Bigger is better. Don’t write long press releases. Journalists have too many to read. The ideal length is 400 – 600 words. If you have more to say, you can provide additional items such as a bio (biography), company history or fact sheet. If the release interests journalists, they will then read your supporting material for more information.

Myth 7. The best way to get free publicity is to buy an ad. This will not influence the decision of whether or not to do a story on you, except with the very small media outlets and trade publications. Journalists will resent you if you try to get them to do a story on you because you are an advertiser.
